I don’t know about you but I’ve always obsessed over having nice pearly whites. Think about it for a second… a good looking smile gives us, humans, a sense of pride and confidence… and who doesn’t like feeling good about themselves? Nobody.
For almost a year now, I’ve been working side by side with one of the smartest and most amazing dentist in New York and I’ve learned a thing or two about having good oral hygiene and keeping teeth as bright and white as possible.
I, for one, treat my teeth as if they were my babies… why? Because I’ve realized that after our baby teeth fall off we only have one set of permanent teeth for the rest of our lives! There are so many things out in the world today that promise white teeth, cavity protection, gingivitis protection etc. etc. etc. and while they could be true they could also be harmful to your teeth… especially their enamel.
If you want to keep your teeth as white as you possibly can there is one basic cardinal rule to remember about foods and drink that can potentially cause stains: ANYTHING THAT CAN STAIN A WHITE TABLE CLOTH CAN AND WILL STAIN YOUR TEETH.
From the experience I’ve gained working at a Dental Office I’ve put together a list of the foods and beverages that cause the most stains in people’s teeth:
Wine – for those of us old enough to drink, red wine is one of the biggest stain causer’s out there. The dark rich color penetrates teeth’s enamel deeply causing redish/brownish pigmentation of the teeth. “Ha, that’s too bad for red wine drinkers but I drink white wine.” While white wine would be a better choice for evading stains, it actually tends to be much more acidic than red wine breaking down the enamel leaving teeth vulnerable to stains. SO BEWARE WINE DRINKERS!
Tea – It seems to me, that recently drinking tea has become one of the “it” things to do and for valid reasons. Tea is super super super healthy for our body. It is rich in antioxidants and other amazing things that have helped people (like myself) lose or keep a healthy weight. Unfortunately, tea is horrible for your teeth! It is said to cause more stains than coffee. Essentially there are 4 types of tea: green, black, white and oolong all of which weaken enamel and cause horrible semi-permanent to permanent stains if not treated.
Coffee – This one is probably not new to anyone. Coffee’s dark color and acidic nature latch on to tooth’s surface and cause stains. You can lessen the stain by adding milk to lighten the color of the coffee but ultimately it will still stain your teeth.
Carbonated Drinks –Not only are these bad for your teeth but they are also HORRIBLE for your body. All the chemicals, acids and dyes added to make sodas weaken enamel and cause SERIOUS stains.
Highly Pigmented Fruits & Berries – Any fruit with vibrant colors like blue//blackberries, cherries, craberries and pomegranates (among many others) can stain your teeth. Pies, cakes, juices or anything made of these colored fruits will also stain your teeth.
Sauces – Deep colored sauces such as tomato, soy, and curry sauce can deeply stain your teeth. The acid in these sauces plus the color pigmentation is a lethal combination for our precious pearly whites.
Sports Drinks // Energy Drinks – Also bad for your body, but teeth wise -because of all the chemicals put in these drinks your teeth will erode making them very sensitive and causing them to stain much faster!
Candy & Sweets –We all know excessive candy eating causes cavities but did you know that it could also stain your teeth? Probably not. If the candy that you absolutely love changes the color of your tongue… then your can bet your tush off that it will change the color of your teeth as well!
Now after reading that list you’re probably thinking to yourself ‘Yes, there are definitely bad things we really shouldn’t be consuming that could stain our teeth but there is bunch of things that are actually really healthy for our bodies but horrible for our teeth.’ How can we still consume stuff like tea, fruits, sauces, coffee and wine without damaging our enamel & without causing stains? Consuming most of the list’s items are essential and benefical to our health and there are simple ways to still consume these things while still lessening the probability of staining our teeth.
- Number one is by visiting your dentist regularly. Most people hate the dentist, I know, but going for your annual visits is definitely a must. This way your dentist can make sure your teeth are nice and healthy & he//she could properly clean & polish them. TRUST ME, making sure your teeth are on a good path now will save you a lot of pain and money in the long run.
- Cutting back on unhealthy consumption of anything from the list above.
- Drink anything that can stain your teeth through a straw. I know this sounds silly but drinking through a straw is one of the best ways to avoid stains. Whatever liquid you’re drinking will pass by completely evading your teeth!
- If you do not wish to use a straw then rinsing your mouth right after drinking//eating anything that could stain your teeth is also good. This way you wash off any residue that could linger and stain your teeth.
- Brushing your teeth after meals is also great, again it washes away residue left behind that could potentially stain your teeth.
